About Us

"It was destiny."

That's the only way Jimmie Dunbar knows to describe his lifelong path to becoming owner of The J.M. Dunbar Home & Crematory in Roebuck, South Carolina.

A journey that began long before Jimmie was ever born, where two men on opposite sides of the state both opened funeral homes in 1886. While John McAlister was opening his funeral home in Charleston, John F. Floyd was opening one in Spartanburg. Decades later, those two legacies were joined when Jimmie's mother, Mary McAlister, married his father, John Floyd Dunbar, a son of Elizabeth Floyd Dunbar.

When Jimmie purchased Lanford-Pollard Funeral Home (now The J.M. Dunbar Funeral Home and Crematory) in 2001, his dream became a reality. The experiences throughout his life led Jimmie to focus on putting the ministry back into the business. He says, "It's a ministry and we are caregivers. When people are coming to us, they want to know they will be cared for."

At the J.M. Dunbar Funeral Home, this family tradition is not a new concept. We're a family with values, beliefs, and traditions. We are a proud family, much like yours. For us, caring for the families of our community is a tradition we were brought up with. It is that tradition that has allowed us to continue serving families with respect, understanding, and compassion. With two family owned and operated facilities, 690 Southport Road, Spartanburg, and 251 East Main Street, Woodruff, our caring staff is only a phone call away.

We understand the special care families need during their time of loss. We know how important respect and dignity are to a family. That's why we care on a personal level, not because it's our business, but because it's our way of life. Personalized service is more than just an option at Dunbar Funeral Home, it's the only way we do business. We go beyond the standards of most funeral homes, assuring our families that their needs are our first priority. We staff personable and professional counselors to assist you with the many details that accompany funeral arrangements, including cremation. As a family-owned and operated funeral home, we take personal pride in providing you with more personalized services, conducted in comfortable surroundings.
