John Larry “Johnny” Kay

December 15, 1951 — August 8, 2012

John Larry Kay, 60, of Spartanburg, died late Wednesday, August 8, 2012, at his home. Born in Greer, Johnny was the son of the late Jack and Mary Ellen Kay. He is survived by his wife, Cindy, his daughter Katie, his son Thomas, and his brother Tommy. He was predeceased by a brother Bobby Kay. Johnny’s main loves were his family, his job teaching children, and sports. In addition to playing baseball and basketball, he was quarterback for Greer High School and is a member of the Greer High School Athletic Hall of Fame. He remained an avid golfer and Gamecock until his last days. After managing Bonds Furniture, which was founded by his late grandfather, Harley Bonds, in Greer for thirty years, Johnny moved to Jesse Bobo and then Anderson Mill Elementary Schools, where he managed the computer labs for the past nine years. He was well loved by the children he taught, and in turn they brought much joy into his life. Most of all, Johnny will be remembered as a loving father, husband, and friend, who always put others first and strived to be a responsible, upright man. He was an active member of St. Matthews Episcopal Church in Spartanburg, where he sang in the choir and had many dear friends. He will be sorely missed, but you can find him on Saturdays in the fall at Williams-Brice. Memorial services will be held on Sunday, August 12 at St. Matthews Episcopal Church in Spartanburg at 4:00 pm. A reception will be held in the parish hall following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Make-A-Wish Foundation® of America, Gift Processing Center, P.O. Box 6062, Albert Lea, MN 56007-6662
