Raymond Gary Owenby

Spartanburg, SC- Raymond Gary Owenby, 59, died Wednesday, May 20, 2015. Born March 20, 1956 in Cowpens, SC, Ray was the son of the late Hugh Raymond Owenby and Barbara Poteat Owenby Kirkland. He was a graduate of Dorman High School, class of 1974. Ray was honorably discharged from the National Guard where he was presented the National Guard Association’s Frank D. Pinckney Award for achieving the highest academic average in the Primary Leadership Development Course of the SC Army National Guard. Ray was retired from Ralph Johnson Company and previously employed with Powell Knitting Mill. He was a member and served as a Deacon at Westside Baptist Church. Ray is survived by his daughter, Brandi Scruggs (T.J.); his grandson, Brayden Scruggs; former wife, Becky Owenby; his brother, Tim Kirkland; aunt, Pat Bullington (Gene); and uncle, Charles Poteat (Gaye). The family will receive friends Friday, May 22nd, 5:00-7:00PM at Dunbar Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 23rd, 2:00PM at Dunbar Funeral Home, officiated by Reverend Dr. Eddie Burris and Reverend Spanky Burris. Burial will be held in Good Shepherd Memorial Park. In remembrance of Ray, memorials may be made to Gibbs Cancer Center, 101 E. Wood St, Spartanburg, SC 29303.
