Spartanburg, SC- Dorothy Ormond Grier, daughter of the late Herbert Lyman and Dorothy Suggs Ormond, died Wednesday, December 2, 2015.
Mrs. Grier is survived by her husband of 65 years, James Thomas Grier; daughter, Janice Grier Corley and her husband, Dr. Ronald B. Corley, of Weston, MA; son, John Riley Grier and his wife, Alice, of Charlotte, NC; and son, Robert Battle Grier and his wife, Lisa, of Spartanburg, SC. Also surviving are eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren: Tom Hodge (Virginia) and three children Autumn, Lachlan and Travers; Evan Corley (Jen); Cullen Corley (Lena); Dori Corley and Charles Corley; Christopher Grier (Caroline) and Morgan Grier; and Robert Grier. Also surviving is her brother, Lyman Ormond (Holly) of Greenville, NC; and her sister, Janice Ormond Reinartz (Paul) of Austin, TX.
Mrs. Grier was born in Kinston, NC on June 22, 1928 and grew up in Greenville, NC. She graduated from Greenville High School and Converse College. She was presented at the 1948 Terpsichorean Ball in Raleigh, NC.
Mrs. Grier was active in the Spartanburg community where she served as chairman of several committees in the Junior League and was president for two years. She was chairman of the board of Mountainview Nursing Home, president of the Assembly, was on the founding committee for what is now the Arts Partnership, and she was on the Board of Visitors of Converse College where she was recently presented with the Mae Elizabeth Kilgo Spirit Award in recognition of her genuine interest and support of Converse. Mrs. Grier was a supporter and a board member of the Spartanburg Little Theater. She appeared on its stage several times singing in Broadway musicals.
There will be a private interment followed by an 11:00AM memorial service at Central United Methodist Church, 233 N. Church Street in Spartanburg, SC on Saturday, December 5, 2015. A reception will be held for friends and family at their home, 1028 Glendalyn Circle, immediately after the services.
The family would like to thank the kind members of The Spartanburg Regional Hospice, Mr. Garshield Jeter and Sharon Hardy and her support team of caregivers for their loving support of Mrs. Grier.
