Alice Smith Phillips

Alice Smith Phillips, daughter of Dr. Daniel Lesesne Smith, Jr. and Clara Ravenel Smith, passed away on July 7th, 2025, at the age of 86. She was granted a gentle departure in the presence of family at Summit Hills Assisted Living Facility in Spartanburg, SC.

Alice was born on December 22, 1938, in Spartanburg. She graduated from the University of South Carolina. She was an educator for many years. She was a devoted member of the Episcopal Church of the Advent and the Church of the Transfiguration.

Alice is remembered by loved ones for her powerful devotion to God and her dedication to serving others. Her greatest joy was being with family and friends in Saluda, North Carolina.

She was preceded in death by her first husband Dr. Frederick Gridley Phillips and her second husband John Miller Waddill; her brother Daniel Lesesne Smith, III. She is survived by her sons Rick Phillips (Anna Gray) and Robert Phillips; grandchildren Lesesne Phillips (Natalie), Gray Phillips and Ted Phillips; great grandson Gray Phillips; her siblings Clara Smith Carter and Dr. Ravenel Smith (Sa); nieces and nephew.

A funeral service will be held at the Church of the Transfiguration in Saluda, NC on Sunday, July 13th at 2:00pm.
