Betty Jane Emory, of Spartanburg, SC was born October 11, 1940, and went home to be with the Lord on September 12, 2024 after a period of declining health. Also known as BJ to her family and friends, she was predeceased by her parents, Alice and Joseph Emory of Clifton and siblings William Gerald Emory, Sr. and Ada Ruth Emory of Spartanburg. She is survived by her nephews William G. (Jerry) Emory, Jr. (Lee Ann) of Seneca, SC, Michael Emory (Sarah) of Spartanburg and niece Beth Emory Zinkevicz (Scott) of York, ME. Great nephews and nieces are William G. Emory lll (Trey) of Atlanta, Tyler Emory of San Francisco; Alex Zinkevicz of Boston, Lindsey Zinkevicz of York, ME; Martha, Sam and Alice Emory of Spartanburg.

Betty graduated from Cowpens High School in 1958. She graduated from North Greenville College and Winthrop College with degrees in education and received her master’s degree from Appalachian State. Betty taught kindergarten in the Gastonia, NC school system for over 30 years. Betty and Ada lived inseparably their whole lives.

Betty was a long-time member of Clifton Second Baptist Church where she sang in the choir, taught Sunday School and served the church in a variety of other capacities. She enjoyed serving others behind the scenes and spending time with her family. She loved serving in the kitchen at Ridgecrest and loved to cook for her family during the holidays and family trips. Betty was also undisputed family champion of Jeopardy.

Betty and Ada played an extremely special role in the lives of Gerald’s children: Jerry, Beth and Michael and their families. The sisters were a source of incredible support during the family’s lives when Gerald’s wife, Martha passed unexpectedly in 1991. Their Clifton home was a magical place for her family.

The family is forever grateful for the loving care she received from the staff of RoseCrest Retirement Community and Sindi Mullinax who assisted in her care.

Memorial contributions may be made to RoseCrest, 200 Fortress Drive, Inman, SC 29349.

The family will hold a Celebration of her Life at Clifton Second Baptist Church on Sunday, September 29, 2024, at 2 PM followed by visitation at the church.
