Betty Jean Harrison Newman, 90, of Walnut Grove saw her Savior face to face Saturday afternoon surrounded by her beloved daughters and caregivers at her home.

She was a daughter of the late Lawrence Harrelson Harrison and Lula Thomas Harrison. Betty was the widow of James Frederick “Buck” Newman who she was married to for 45 years. She was born in Spartanburg County and graduated in the first 12-year class at Woodruff High School in 1949. Betty moved to Columbia to attend Columbia Business College where she made three lifelong friends she treasured throughout her life.

Mrs. Newman was a lifetime member of Mt. Calvary Presbyterian Church where she served faithfully in the Women in the Church, Vacation Bible School Director, taught Sunday School and Youth, and was a mighty prayer warrior for her pastor, congregation, family, and friends.

Left to cherish and honor her life are her three daughters, Alexia and Betsy Newman, Krisila Newman Foster (Randy); grandchildren, Blake, and Parker Foster McDonald (Graham); and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who loved her dearly.

She was predeceased by eight brothers: Cliff, Ratch, Chester, Whit, Hugh, Lawrence, Lad, and Howard, and five sisters: Magdalene Harrison, Josephine Harrison Brown, Virl Harrison Sherbert, Monnie Harrison Rhodes, and Nellie Harrison Brown.

A special thank you to five ladies who loved and cared for her so she could remain in her home of 63 years: Mrs. Teresa Pearson, Mrs. Sierra Pearson, Mrs. Rhonda Moody, Mrs. Caroline Smith, and Mrs. Kathy May.
