Charles Wayman “Charlie” Sasser, Jr., 80, of Spartanburg, South Carolina, passed away peacefully on March 13, 2026, surrounded by his family.
Born May 7, 1945 in New Bern, North Carolina. He was the son of the late C. Wayman Sasser and Martha Bland Sasser. He grew up in Chattanooga, TN and graduated from The University of Tennessee with a degree in Mechanical Engineering.
Charlie was known for his quick wit, puns and dad jokes. He enjoyed sailing, bicycling, computers, beach music and the University of Tennessee football games. Above all he loved his wife of 54 years, Claire. His family and friends meant the world to him. His laughter, brilliant mind and loving heart will be deeply missed.
Charlie is survived by his wife Claire Works Sasser, his daughters Clairey S. Grubbs (Cody) of Alpine, WY and Dallas C. Sasser of Spartanburg, SC, as well as his beloved grandson Tanner O. Grubbs. He is also survived by his brother Herbert B. Sasser (Charlotte), his sister-in-law Ann W. Balderston (Biv), his nieces and nephews, Sarah Q. Balderston (Chris M. Jolovich), Maggie C. Balderston, John C. Balderston, Philip A. Sasser (Lisa), great-niece Lily M. Sasser and his labs Sailor, Sassy and the cat Kitty Kat.
The service is planned for 2 P.M Wednesday April 1, 2026 at The Episcopal Church of the Advent, 141 Advent Street, Spartanburg, SC 29302.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Josh Lee Memorial Scholarship Fund, c/o USC Upstate 800 University Way Spartanburg, SC 29303.
