Dr. Cavert Keith McCorkle passed from this life on July 8, 2026, at the age of 79. Born on August 18, 1946, in Wadesboro, North Carolina to the late Philip Hunter McCorkle and Mary Smith McCorkle, his loving parents instilled in him and his older brother, the late Philip H. McCorkle, Jr, a love of learning and a compassionate heart. Cavert was honest and kind to everyone who knew him, with a gentle humor and open heart.

Cavert's father was a career Army officer in the years following World War II, so the family spent his childhood living in Tokyo and Paris, as well as New Jersey, North Carolina, and Washington, D.C. He was a bright student, who developed an interest in studying medicine after his mother's prolonged illness when he was in high school. Cavert graduated from Clemson University in1968, then pursued his medical degree at the Medical University of South Carolina. He graduated from MUSC in 1972, and completed his residency in neurosurgery at George Washington University Hospital. He built a successful and distinguished career dedicated to healing and innovation in the field of neurosurgery, earning board certification in neurological surgery and becoming a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a Fellow of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons.

During the course of his 31-year career, Cavert dedicated his professional life to serving the community of Spartanburg through his work at Spartanburg Neurosurgical. Cavert cared for an extraordinary number of both surgical and nonsurgical patients, an experience that he described as "an incredible, God-given opportunity." His commitment to his patients was unparalleled, and he was known for his surgical skill, as well as for the warmth and thoroughness in treating his patients as individuals.

After his retirement, Cavert established two endowed scholarships in the MUSC College of Medicine in memory and honor of his parents for their unwavering support of education. He saw this as a way to pass on to others the benefits that his parents gave to him. He also provided for the creation of a Distinguished Endowed Chair in Neurological Surgery, helping MUSC to recruit and support a nationally prominent authority in the field.

Beyond his professional achievements, Cavert was a devoted and active member of the First Presbyterian Church, Spartanburg, where he found spiritual fulfillment and community. His faith was an integral part of his life, guiding him through his endeavors with grace and humility.

Cavert is survived by his life partner, Charles A Burns of Spartanburg. Together, they shared a life filled with love, laughter, and mutual respect, supporting each other through life's joys and challenges.
