Gayle Dunn Spangler passed peacefully July 25, 2025 in Spartanburg, S.C. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Joe Spangler. She is survived by her daughters Anna Farris (Kevin) and Laura Quinn (Tim), grandsons Colin & Jeffrey Farris and Kyle Quinn, brother Claude Dunn, Jr. (Joanne), and sister Margaret Barham (Eddie), nephews Claude Dunn III, John Dunn, & David Barham.
Gayle was born in Edgecombe County, N.C., to Hannah Margaret Liles Dunn & Claude Lee Dunn, Sr. and raised in Zebulon N.C. She was a 1955 graduate of Wakelon School. She was an excellent scholar and graduated in 3 years from East Carolina College (now East Carolina University). She pursued a career in education and taught elementary and pre-school for many years. She met Joe at a church event in High Point N.C., and they were happily married for 56 years. After Anna and Laura were born, Gayle was a devoted and attentive mother.
After leaving N. Carolina, Gayle and Joe followed his career to Dallas, TX, Atlanta, GA, Loraine, OH & Plano, TX before retiring to Holly Lake Ranch, TX on the golf course. Everywhere they lived, Joe and Gayle were active in their church communities, making many lifelong friends. They enjoyed playing in Bridge Clubs, and Gayle was an accomplished seamstress who created beautiful clothes and quilts, which our family will cherish for many years.
During retirement (and even before) the two of them were avid travelers. They enjoyed many road trips throughout the U.S., visiting almost every state. They took over 50 cruises to many parts of the world. Gayle kept beautifully chronicled photo albums of their journeys.
In recent years, Gayle & Joe moved to Spartanburg, SC to be closer to their daughter Laura and husband, Tim. When Joe passed in 2020, Laura ensured that mother was in a safe and comfortable environment living at Summit Hills in Spartanburg. Gayle was mentally sharp until the very end of her life and was always thinking of her family, especially her grandsons.
We would like to thank the staff at Summit Hills in their care for Gayle over the past 4 years. The entire family is also grateful to Tim and Laura for their steadfast and compassionate care for Mother and Dad in their final years. We can never repay them enough for all their efforts taking care of any needs that arose. Condolences may be sent care of the Quinn Family, 179 Green Acres Rd., Roebuck, SC, 29376.
