Helen O West

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Helen O’Shields West, a beloved mother, “Mimi,” and devoted servant of the Lord. She passed away on October 17, 2026, just two days after celebrating her 95th birthday, leaving behind a legacy of faith, love, and service to others.

Helen devoted her life to her faith, her family, and her community. A homemaker, she found great joy in spending time with her loved ones and traveling extensively with her late husband, Don. She also dedicated an extraordinary 54 years to volunteering with the Red Cross at Spartanburg Regional Hospital, reflecting her generous heart and commitment to serving others.

A faithful member of Roebuck Baptist Church, Helen taught Sunday School for many years and was actively involved in the church’s Women’s Ministries and the WMU.

Helen was predeceased by her beloved husband of 66 years, Donald C. West; her parents, Dexter E. and Clara Belle Goodwin O’Shields; and eight siblings.

She is survived by her three sons, Mike (Sandra), Mark (Karen), and Bob (Jayne) West; her grandchildren, Matthew West, Karilyn (Derek) Parker, Kandace (Jason) Schoelen, Bert West, and Jack West; and her great-grandchildren, Weston Parker, Jase Schoelen, Reid Schoelen, and Cam Schoelen.

Helen’s life was a testament to the enduring power of faith, family, and service. She will be remembered with love by all who knew her, and her legacy will live on through the generations of family who will cherish her memory.

The family will receive friends from 5–7 p.m. on Friday, October 23, at Dunbar Funeral Home, 690 Southport Road, Roebuck, SC.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, October 24, at Roebuck Baptist Church, 1979 East Blackstock Road, Roebuck, SC. 

Interment will follow at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens in Spartanburg, SC.
