Helga Barth Bastien, age 84, passed away peacefully on June 14, 2026. She was born on February 3, 1942, in Germany to August and Frieda Barth.
At the age of 20, Helga bravely left her homeland and moved to the United States in 1962, beginning a new chapter filled with adventure, family, faith, and service.
Helga was a devoted mother to her daughters, Pat Scruggs (Mike) and Karen Tucker (Lewis). She was the proud Omi to five grandchildren, Michael Scruggs (Pete Burd), Matthew Scruggs (Casey), Nathan Scruggs (Hanah), Lauren Pagliuca (Spencer), and Christian Tucker (Logan), and to three great-grandchildren, Grady and Deacon Scruggs and Sienna Pagliuca. Family was the center of her world, and she delighted in spending time with those she loved most.
Helga had a passion for gardening and found great joy in nurturing flowers and plants. She was an exceptional baker and was known among family and friends for her “Famous Apple Pies”. She enjoyed traveling, whether returning home to Germany, spending time at the beach, or visiting her grandson in Denver. A woman of deep faith, Helga faithfully served her church, where she was especially known for her coffee duties and the fellowship she shared with others. Helga also had a special love for animals, especially her dogs, and found peace and happiness in observing the beauty of nature around her. She appreciated life's simple pleasures and found wonder in the world God created.
In her later years at Lakewood Facility, Helga's vibrant personality continued to shine. She quickly won the hearts of residents and staff alike, becoming affectionately known as "Omi" and "Helgie". Her spirited nature earned her the memorable title of "Sassiest Award," a recognition she wore proudly.
Helga will be remembered for her strength, kindness, humor, faith, and unwavering love for her family. Her legacy lives on in the many lives she touched and in the cherished memories shared by those who knew and loved her.
Services will be announced once confirmed.
