Herbert Altamont Moses

Herbert Altamont Moses died July 15, 2023 at age 100, while on vacation at his summer home at Lake Summit (NC), surrounded by loved ones and after having been swimming the day before. He was born in Sumter, SC, on Feb 22, 1923 to Henry Philips Moses and Charlotte Emanuel Moses. Herb married Annabel Hamilton Cribb of Spartanburg, SC in 1950, and they enjoyed 69 happy years before her death in November 2020.

Herb is survived by his three children: Annabel Pougnier (Jean) of Scottsdale, AZ; Gigi Dalton (Matt) of Louisville, CO; and Steve Moses (Flo) of Mount Pleasant, SC.

Herb is also survived by his five grandchildren: Caroline Pougnier (Eric Simpson) of San Francisco, CA; Andrew Dalton of Louisville CO; Dr. Charlotte Pougnier (Noel Lopinta); Ginny Moses (Steamboat, CO); Suzanna Moses (Asheville, NC), and John Moses (Raleigh, NC). Herb had three great-grandchildren: Emilia and Rafael Lopinta and Juliette Simpson.

Herb was preceded in death by his identical twin brother Vivian M. Moses, sister Octavia Mahon, and brothers Richard and Robert Moses, the latter also a centenarian.

Herb studied engineering at Clemson College, then entered the Marine Corps in 1943 for pilot training, and was discharged in 1947 with the rank of 1st Lieutenant. He then returned to Clemson to complete his degree. He and Annabel lived in Greenville, S.C., where Herb was in the construction materials industry. He retired in 2005 at the age of 82.

A graveside service was held July 17, 2023 at the Greenlawn Memorial Gardens in Spartanburg.
