James Stephen Hiott

September 7, 1956 — October 4, 2025

Spartanburg

James Stephen Hiott (Steve), 69, of Moore, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, October 4, 2025. Steve was the husband of Joyce Teal Hiott and son of the late Frank and Betty Casey Hiott.

Born in Columbia, SC, Steve was saved at 11 years old. His grandmother gifted him his first bible and wrote a scripture inside that was significant in his life - John 14:1-3. Steve graduated from Lower Richland High School and moved to Spartanburg four years later in 1978.

He made his mark on the food service industry as a sales executive at Food Service Supply, Food Equipment, Ballentine and QualServ, helping restaurant chains install, open and maintain their kitchen and dining equipment. He made many friends in the industry across the upstate.

An avid Gamecock fan, Steve enjoyed cheering on USC in all sports, especially the football and women’s basketball teams. One of his favorite pastimes was watching his granddaughter in her many activities, most especially dance. He never missed a competition or a performance! He loved spending time with Joyce in Pigeon Forge twice each year. Steve was a fan of the daily NYT puzzles like Wordle and Connections and enjoyed sharing his results each day with his family.

Steve was a long-time member of First Baptist Church Spartanburg where he served as a Deacon, an usher, and a member of the Lord’s Supper Team. He loved attending his Koinonia Life Group each week and the associated breakfasts, dinners and outings with those special friends. He also attended a weekly men’s bible study every Tuesday that was very important to him.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter, Kim Buckner Land and husband Jason of Inman; son Jamie Hiott of Moncks Corner; granddaughter Kelsey Land of Inman; brothers Rick Hiott (De) of Columbia, Frank Hiott (Theresa) of Chapin; sister Yvonne Kirkman (Lin) of Hartsville; and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, October 8 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at J.M. Dunbar Funeral Home at 690 Southport Road in Roebuck. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, October 9 at 3 p.m. at J.M. Dunbar Funeral Home conducted by Dr. Keith Phillips and Rev. Brian Redding. Interment will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens in Spartanburg.
