John “Butch” Burrell, loving husband to Brenda Harris Burrell, passed away peacefully at home on June 17, 2026 after a long illness. He was born June 21, 1941 in Spartanburg, SC to the late Herman Marion Burrell and Marie Stone Burrell Tumblin.
After graduating from Spartanburg High School, Butch dedicated much of his professional life to his beloved Eastern Airlines (29 years) and later retired from Northwest Airlines. He and his wife, Brenda, were the owners and operators of Carolina Travel in Spartanburg for many years.
Butch was a faithful and active member of Trinity United Methodist Church, volunteering there several days a week. He found great joy in serving his church family and the extended community. Butch was a proud member of the Ruritan Club of Spartanburg, where he enjoyed fellowship and community involvement.
He will always be remembered for his warm smile, welcoming spirit, and humble nature. He truly never met a stranger. Butch had a remarkable gift for making others feel valued and was always willing to lend a helping hand. His kindness, generosity, and genuine concern for others left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him.
Butch is survived by his beloved wife, Brenda; children, Russell “Rusty” Burrell and Tena Burrell Ashley; grandchildren, Ashley Hood (Matt) and Erin King (Michael); great-grandchildren, Kenzie Hood, Logan Hood, Haylee King, and Thayden King; sister, Gertrude Weathers (Marvin); brother-in-law, Nelson Breeden; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be 2:00-2:45pm on Tuesday, July 7, 2026 in Trinity United Methodist Church, 626 Norwood Street, Spartanburg, SC 29302. Memorial services will follow at 3:00pm, conducted by Rev. Ricky Howell.
In memory of Butch, contributions may be made to Trinity United Methodist Church or to Spartanburg Humane Society.
Butch’s life was defined by faith, family, service, and friendship. His legacy of compassion, humility, and love will continue to live on in the hearts of his family, friends, and community.
