John Anthony Szwapa

Drayton – John Anthony Szwapa, 52, died Monday, September 27, 2021.

John was born on November 11, 1968, to the late Frank Thomas and Hazel Brady Szwapa.

He was a graduate of Western Michigan University majoring in sociology and criminal justice. John is remembered as a physically strong and kindhearted man. He loved people and made friends across many socioeconomic and cultural lines.  A self-taught historian, he possessed an encyclopedic knowledge of facts and events of the World War II period. He also enjoyed artistic pursuits as a painter and maker of artisan jewelry. Lastly, he will be remembered as a diehard fan of the Detroit Red Wings.

John is survived by three sisters, Dr. Mary Haddad and her husband, Dr. George Haddad, of Greenville, SC, and their children, Gabrielle, Sarah, and Rebecca; Dr. Cynthia Irizarry and her husband, Frank Irizarry, of Boston, MA, and their children, John and Frankie; and Karen Patinella of Spartanburg, SC, and her child, Cristiano.

The family will receive friends from 6:00PM to 8:00PM on Friday, October 1, 2021 at Dunbar Funeral Home.

A funeral service will be held at 10:00AM on Saturday, October 2, 2021 at the Dunbar Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church; 161 N. Dean St., Spartanburg, SC 29302
