Margaret Tiernan Armstrong

Margaret “Peggy” Tiernan Armstrong passed away on Tuesday, August 26, 2025 at the age of 88. Peggy was born in Detroit, Michigan, on November 14, 1936, to Anna Walsh and Robert Michael Tiernan. She attended Immaculata High School and graduated from Marygrove College in 1958. She married John “Jack” Murphy Armstrong on October 10,1959, and moved to Spartanburg, South Carolina, where she spent the next sixty-five years.

She enjoyed tennis and golf, and she was a lifelong skier. In fact, Peggy met Jack on the ski slopes. She also enjoyed bridge, fly fishing, and her weekly get-togethers with the Friday Lunch Bunch.

Peggy was a member of the Shortia Garden Club, Tea & Topics book club, the Junior League of Spartanburg, and the Spartanburg Debutante Club. She was also on the Bereavement Committee at St Paul the Apostle, and she and Jack delivered Mobile Meals for more than ten years.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by her four children, John Murphy Armstrong, Jr. (Martha); Margaret “Megan” Armstrong Taylor (Julian); Michael Tiernan Armstrong; and James Patrick Armstrong.

Peggy and Jack were the proud grandparents to seven: John Murphy Armstrong, III (Rebecca); Elizabeth Armstrong Schoen (Briggs); Julian Armstrong Taylor; William Winn Taylor; Anna Taylor Whitmore (Tommy); Mary Martin Armstrong; and Michael Tiernan Armstrong, Jr.

They additionally have 2 great grandchildren: John Murphy Armstrong, IV, and Thomas Francis Armstrong.

Peggy was predeceased by her brother, Robert Alloys Tiernan.

A funeral mass will be held at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church, 290 East Main Street, Spartanburg, S.C. 29302, on Friday, September 5th at 3:30pm.

Memorials in Peggy’s honor may be made to St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church or St. Paul the Apostle Catholic School.
