May 5, 1932 – July 16, 2023

Myrtle Walden Poteat, age 91, passed away peacefully on July 16, 2023.

Born on May 5, 1932, in Spartanburg, SC, Myrtle was the daughter of the late John W. Walden, Sr. and Alba Brannon Carter Walden. She was preceded in death by her beloved son, Ted Douglas Poteat, Jr.; and four siblings, Alvin (Lillian) Carter, Agatha (Richard) Davis, Martha (Herman) Jones, and Carolyn (Clyde) Hill. Myrtle is survived by her youngest brother, John W. Walden, Jr. (Diane) and numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews.

Myrtle was a wonderful mother to her son Doug, who graduated from Wofford College and earned his pilot’s license. After being commissioned to the US Air Force, he served his county until his death at age 42. She was proud of him and missed him dearly. Years later, Myrtle's family found a note she left about him that read, "My life really started when he was born.  They were the happiest years of my life."

Myrtle loved her many nieces and nephews, and their children. Some were fortunate enough to have her as a caregiver when they were young. She kept every baby, school, graduation, and wedding photo given to her, looking at them often.

Myrtle was known as the family historian. She loved to talk about the old Walden homeplace, her parents, and siblings. Myrtle kept up with her Glendale community and cared deeply for her friends and neighbors. She enjoyed porch sitting with friends and family while enjoying homemade biscuits or German chocolate cake and sweet tea.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society in memory of Myrtle, who lost her son to cancer. https://raiseyourway.donordrive.com/campaign/In-Loving-Memory-of-Myrtle-W-Poteat
