Nancy Carolyn (Maynor) Turner, 82, of Spartanburg, passed away at her home on Thursday, September 19, 2024.
Nancy was born on August 3, 1942, to Clarence Nathan Maynor and Bertha Crocker Maynor in Cowpens, SC. Nancy graduated from Cowpens High School in the Class of 1960. In August of 1961, Nancy married Joe Hal Turner of Spartanburg. Nancy and Joe had two children, Tara Turner Moorhead of Spartanburg and Joe Hal Turner II of Gulf Breeze Florida.
Anyone who knew Nancy saw a woman who was strong, intelligent, elegant, soft-spoken, and unfailingly dedicated to her family. Whenever possible, she assumed the daily caregiver role for her grandchildren (and others). She remained very active in their lives into adulthood. Just two weeks ago, Nancy hosted her grandson's wedding at her home, where she was the "belle of the ball," and friends and family from near and far relished spending time with her, sharing stories, memories, endless laughs, hugs, and adoration for the matriarch of her family.
Nancy was known amongst family and her and Joe's friends as a skilled poker player who was often difficult to beat. She sat quietly, smiling in her demure way, while building a hand that frequently wiped the table clean. After Joe's passing, she became an active Member of St. Johns Lutheran Church in Spartanburg. In the church, she gained friends and a new 'church family' where she became an active member of the lady's Circle 2. Over the last ten years, she thoroughly enjoyed learning to play bridge. She looked forward to weekly games with the ladies of her church as well as the Wednesday Morning Bridge Club, even up until the week she passed.
Nancy was predeceased by her husband and Parents but left behind a family who adored her. Her closest relatives include her children, Tara Turner Moorhead of Spartanburg and Joe Hal Turner II (Andrea) of Gulf Breeze, FL. Her grandchildren are Austin Turner Hann (Ryan) of Aiken, SC, Chaney Turner (Zach Hughes) of Charlotte, NC, Jackson Turner (Taylor), and Bowen Turner of Gulf Breeze, FL. Four Great-Grandchildren Miss Marleigh Hughes, Miss Madison Hann, Miss Madaline Hughes, and Master Jameson Hornsby (Jackson and Taylor's son). A dedicated sister, Lynne Mattison (Wayne) of Spartanburg; two loyal and devoted nieces (and best friends) Pam Bulman (Gil) and Vicki McCraw (Roddy), both of Spartanburg; a nephew, David Mattison (Rebekah) of Spartanburg and niece Amy Snyder (Brandon) of Clover, SC. There are a multitude of great nieces, great nephews, and cousins who Nancy adored and followed with loving dedication. She was the ultimate mother figure to many. She was truly loved by all and will be missed terribly.
The family will receive visitors at St. John’s Lutheran Church (415 S. Pine Street, Spartanburg, SC 29302) on Saturday, September 28, beginning at 10:00 am in the social hall with a service in the Sanctuary at 11:00 am. There will be a private family celebration at the home following services.
