Robert Ladson Berry

January 23, 1952 — May 3, 2025

Spartanburg, SC

Robert Ladson Berry, 73, of Spartanburg, South Carolina, passed away peacefully in Spartanburg. Born on January 23, 1952, growing up in Inman, South Carolina, he was a son of the late Horace Spartan and Sara Foster Berry. Ladson was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend whose life reflected his deep faith, gentle strength, and unwavering compassion for others.

Ladson was a proud graduate of Furman University and went on to earn his master’s degree from the University of Georgia. He dedicated 41 years of his life to Spartanburg County School District 3, where he served as a school psychologist and Director of Special Education. His wisdom, humility, and genuine love for his students and teachers left a lasting impact on generations of young people and educators.

He is survived by his loving wife of many years, Susan Lee Berry; their children, Lee Berry, Isabel Sloan (Brett), and Grace Elliott (Matt); and grandson, Michael Sloan. He is also survived by his brother, Carl Berry (Kathy); sister-in-law, Dianne Lee; niece, Jessica Skinner (John C.); nephew, Christopher Berry (Spencer); and great-nieces and nephews, Carlisle, Winn, and Piers.

Ladson found great joy and spiritual connection in nature. A passionate outdoorsman, he was an avid camper, photographer, and hiker, visiting 37 national parks throughout his life. His heart for others was evident in every relationship—he had a unique gift for encouragement and made it his mission to share the Gospel, always leading with grace and love.

As a husband, father, and "Grand Daddy," Ladson led his family with quiet strength and profound faith. He leaves behind a legacy of joy, integrity, and selfless devotion. His life was a living testimony, and even in his final moments, he exemplified excellence in all he did.
