Smith “Smitty” Dyson

September 1, 1937 — February 15, 2023

Spartanburg - Smith Dyson of Arcadia died on Wednesday, February 15, 2023. He was born September 1, 1937 in Sumter S.C. to the late Johnnie James “Bubba” and Ida Mae Geddings Dyson.  Smitty married Donna Carrier on January 30, 1960.  

Smitty never met a stranger.  He was known and loved by so many in the Arcadia and Spartanburg community.  Smitty loved old westerns and antique cars and trucks.  He enjoyed spending time with his family most of all and will be missed beyond measure.  Smitty was employed by Model Dye Mills, Sumter, SC.  After moving to Spartanburg in 1976, he worked for Barnett Southern where he retired after 33 years of service.  Upon retirement, Smitty joined his son Eddie in opening MidWay Forklift and Equipment in Roebuck for 16 years. 

Smitty is survived by his 4 children, Charles “Rick” Dyson and partner Moses Halterman, Denese Tolbert and husband Dowlin Mayfield, Eddie Dyson and wife Charlene Cianciarulo, and Paul Dyson and wife Julie Young; bonus children, Travis Wyatt and wife Shelley Wyatt and Christy Wyatt; sisters, Ethel Hudson, Virginia Parker, Emily Harrington; brother, Bill Dyson.  He has 10 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and extended family and friends. 

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife Donna Dyson; brother, Earl Dyson and very special friend Linda Wyatt. 

Visitation will be Sunday, February 19, 2023 from 1:00-2:00PM at Dunbar Funeral Home.  A memorial service will follow at 2:00PM in the chapel. 

Visitation will also be held Monday, February 20, 2023 from 12:00-1:00PMlocated at Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home, Sumter, SC.  Funeral service will follow at 1:00PM in the chapel.      

Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Park, Sumter, SC.
