Spartanburg

Surrounded by her loving family, Vickie Elaine Vaughan Martin, at the age of 76, ran into the open arms of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, Tuesday, November 12th, after her long bout with Alzheimer's. Vickie was a the daughter of the late Charles and Gladys Burnett Vaughan. Vickie is a member of Roebuck Baptist Church, and former member of Beaver Hill and Arkwright Baptist churches.

Vickie is survived by her husband of 58 years, Ernest "Ernie" Martin, son Eric Martin (Cindy), daughter Tammy Hord (Tim). Vickie was especially proud of being a Nana to her grandchildren: Tyler Martin (Amber), Trevor Martin (Candice), Bo Hord, Ellie Hord, and great grandchildren: Tinsley Martin, Teal Martin, Tatum Martin, and T.J. Martin. Vickie is also survived by her sister, Ruby Scruggs (Jack) and her brother, Charles Vaughan Jr. (Debbie), along with several nieces, nephews and cousins from the Martin and Vaughan families.

Vickie became an LPN in 1977, but chose to continue being a great mother and wife. Vickie embarked on her successful professional career in 1983 with Spartan Foods, and after 20 years of company changes, Vickie left as the Risk Manager of Denny's Corp. Vickie then took the position of Director of Risk Management for the Extended Stay Hotels, becoming a Partner in the LLC, before retiring after 10 years, in 2013.

Vickie dated Ernie in high school, and when Ernie joined the Navy, she knew her life would change. Vickie married Ernie, the week she graduated Dorman High School in 1967. They immediately moved to Memphis, TN, then to Kingsburg, CA. The next year they moved to Lemoore, CA. In between Navy cruises, and afterwards, Vickie's home and heart was in Roebuck, SC.

Vickie loved to travel, especially cruises, local camping trips, staying at cabins in Pigeon Forge, and even enjoyed traveling for work. Vickie has been on 26 cruises, traveled to 29 states, and 12 countries. She has visited Hawaii 8 times, Alaska 3 times, California more times that you can count, and Niagara Falls, twice. When Extended Stay moved their HQ from Spartanburg, she was ready for a new adventure. Once during a trip to England, she made sure to teach a group of English ladies how to make sweet iced tea.

Special thanks to her cousin, Kay Gordon and granddaughter, Candice Martin, for their excellent and compassionate homecare. These past few months being made a lot easier due to the staff and nurses of Spartanburg Agape Hospice and the Hospice of the Carolina Foothills, in Forest City.
