Wayne A. Barnes

Feb 23, 1944 — Oct 19, 2026

Spartanburg, SC

Wayne A. Barnes, beloved husband of Brenda Darlene Pettit Barnes, passed away on October 19, 2026. Born on February 23, 1944, he was the son of the late A.B. Barnes and Sue Puckett Barnes and brother to Patsy Gosnell (Roger).

Wayne and Darlene shared 62 years of marriage, building a life filled with love, family, and countless memories. Wayne often joked that he would have been “in a heap of trouble” had he not married Darlene, giving her credit for saving him. Their enduring love and partnership were a testament to the life they built together.

A man of strong faith, Wayne loved the Lord and faithfully previously served as a deacon in his church. His faith was an important part of who he was and how he lived his life. He was a devoted family man who especially enjoyed teaching his grandchildren valuable life lessons, sharing his wisdom, and guiding them along the way. To his grandchildren, he was affectionately known as “Papa Barnes,” a name that will forever hold a special place in their hearts.

Wayne had a deep love for the outdoors and was an avid hunter who also enjoyed farming. He was a true jack of all trades, known for his many talents, practical knowledge, and ability to fix just about anything. His skills and strong work ethic earned him the respect of those who knew and worked alongside him. At work, he was nicknamed “Mule,” a fitting name for a man known for his strength, determination, and willingness to stand his ground. Wayne was a man of conviction who commanded respect through his character and dependability.

His love for teaching and mentoring extended beyond his family. Wayne was involved with Boy Scouts Troop 221, where he served as Scoutmaster for many years and was a member of the Order of the Arrow.

When he wasn't outdoors or spending time with family, Wayne enjoyed cheering on the Carolina Panthers. Whether working on a project, tending to the farm, hunting, or sharing a lesson with one of his grandchildren, he found purpose in staying busy and being there for the people he loved.

Wayne is survived by his devoted wife, Brenda Darlene Pettit Barnes; his daughters, Melissa Barnes Henderson and Jennifer Barnes Shue; his grandchildren, Heather Holland (Jamie), Matthew Henderson, Trevor Shue (Hannah), Caleb Henderson (Kayla), Jeremy Henderson, Austin Barnes, Wayne Barnes (Mariah), Lydia Shue, Lexi Harmon, and Layla Harmon; and his great-grandchildren, Presley Holland, Easton Holland, Callaway Holland, Cara Holland, Lillie Shue, Rosie Shue, and Casen Henderson.

In addition to his parents, Wayne was preceded in death by his son, Darrell Wayne Barnes, and his granddaughters, Hannah Melissa Henderson and Jenna Lyn Shue.

Wayne leaves behind a legacy of faith, strength, hard work, and love for his family. He will be remembered as a devoted husband, a loving father and grandfather, a faithful servant of the Lord, and a man who could always be counted on. His lessons, laughter, and the love he shared will live on through the many lives he touched, especially those of his beloved family, who will forever remember him as Papa Barnes.
