William (Bill) Layton Duncan, of Spartanburg, SC, passed away on Saturday, February 7, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family. Bill was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, uncle, and friend.
Born on September 11, 1950, in Spartanburg, SC, he attended Spartanburg High School, excelling in sports and academics. He attended Presbyterian College, where he earned his Bachelor of Science, before enrolling at the University of Louisville to complete his law degree.
After earning his law degree, Bill spent several years working for the state of Kentucky as a prosecutor, during what he called his “glory days.” In 1985, he moved back to Spartanburg to begin working as a civil defense attorney until he retired in 2023.
Throughout the various chapters of life, Bill developed strong relationships with lifelong friends through his knack for connecting with others and his charismatic personality. Childhood friends might share stories of how often Bill initiated a sports game or outdoor play, or how adored Bill was by friends’ mothers for his voracious appetite. He loved to relive his high school football days and, in good humor, share his many accolades with his family. Throughout his college years, Bill was the heart of the group, naturally bringing people together and rallying friends for intramural sports.
Bill will be remembered for his sincere dedication to his family and friends. Above all else, he was a loyal father, husband, uncle, and grandfather. He was forever a civil servant, as his altruistic draw to law was rooted in “truth and justice.” He cared deeply for the welfare of others and was a devoted member of St Paul United Methodist Church.
Bill’s children will proudly note that he taught many things through his actions, more so than his words. From him, they learned that all are equal in God’s eyes and that everyone is entitled to an opinion that deserves respect and a nonjudgmental ear.
Bill touched many lives and will be deeply missed. His family finds comfort in the memories he created throughout the beautiful chapters of his life and in the strong relationships he built along the way. They are grateful for the man he was, the influence he had on others, and the enduring impact of his life.
Bill was predeceased by his parents, David and Alliene Duncan, and his brothers, David and Mike Duncan. Bill is survived by his wife, Bobbi Duncan, his daughters, Cassie Sander (Adam) and Lindsey Graham (Chad), and his grandchildren, Ruth and Harry Sander, and Tate, Layton, and William Graham, as well as nieces and a nephew, who will miss him dearly.
A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, February 10, in St Paul United Methodist Church at 2:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Missions at St Paul United Methodist Church, 1320 Fernwood Glendale Rd. Spartanburg, SC 29307
