William Jay Mather

William "Bill" Jay Mather, 84, returned to his Father in Heaven on Thursday, August 6, 2026. He was born in Smithfield, UT on June 18, 1942 to the late Anna Eliza and Thomas Edgar Mather.

Bill earned an Associate's degree in Accounting from Stevens-Henager College in Ogden, Utah. He spent more than 25 years as the Business Manager for Powers Solutions before retiring.

He had an adventurous spirit and a playful, teasing nature that brought joy to family and friends. He developed a love for recreational shooting with his son and found great satisfaction working outdoors. He enjoyed landscaping and took pride in creating a community green space in his neighborhood.

Bill was an active lifetime member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He has a deep and abiding love for his Savior, Jesus Christ. Bill faithfully served in many callings, including twice as Bishop of the Spartanburg Ward, past President of the Elders Quorum, and past High Councilor. His faith guided the way he lived and served others.

Service to others was a defining part of Bill's life. He participated in disaster relief efforts through the Helping Hands program, volunteered at the local soup kitchen, and delivered meals through Meals on Wheels. He was always willing to lend a helping hand wherever there was a need.

Above all, Bill cherished his family. His greatest happiness came from being surrounded by the joyful noise of his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He will be remembered for his loving heart, generous spirit, sense of humor, and the lasting impact he made on his family, church, and community.

He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Janice Christensen Mather and his three daughters, Valerie Lyn Drollinger (Mark), Jennifer Mather Marrott (Marshall), and Amanda Jo Conner (Brett). He was preceded in death by his son, William Wade Mather (Tina Mather-Morella). He is a beloved grandfather to 14 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be 6:30-8:30pm on Friday, August 14 in J. M. Dunbar Funeral Home, 690 Southport Road, Roebuck, SC 29376.

Funeral services will be 11:00am on Saturday, August 15 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 121 Quail Drive, Spartanburg, SC 29302. Interment will immediately follow in Sunset Memorial Park, 1955 Cannons Campground Road, Spartanburg, SC 29307.
