Spartanburg, SC- Gerhard Grommer, 63, husband of Mary Vierbuchen Grommer, passed away on Thursday, August 26, 2021, peacefully at his home. Born September 13, 1957 in Saint Roman, Austria, he was a son of Anna Kieslinger Grommer and the late Josef Grommer. While in Austria, Gerhard graduated from the Hotel Austria Culinary School and earned the title of Master Chef. Before making his way to Spartanburg, Gerhard worked on a cruise ship where he met his beloved wife, Mary. They fell in love while cruising the Atlantic and were married October 17, 1981. Gerhard and Mary lived in Fort Lauderdale, FL before relocating to Spartanburg in 1993. For the past 28 years, Gerhard and his family have owned, operated, and served the Spartanburg community at Gerhard’s Café. In his spare time, Gerhard was an avid and zealous hunter and fisherman, and enjoyed spending time on his farm. His number one loves were his family and his two granddaughters. He was a longtime member of St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church. In addition to his wife of 39 years, Gerhard is survived by his children, Christopher Grommer (Shannon), Brittany Grommer, Stephen Grommer, and Josef Grommer; grandchildren, Zoe Anna Grommer and Emma Kaley Grommer; brothers, Josef, Franzi, Conrad, Stefan, and Rudi Grommer; and a sister, Maria. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, August 31st, 10:00AM at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church. The burial will be held privately with only immediate family in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Spartanburg Regional Hospice, P O Box 2624, Spartanburg, SC 29304.
